Ministry working on ‘educational tourism’ with South Korea

KUCHING: The Ministry of Tourism is working to attract more teachers and students from South Korea to the state to attend educational programmes.
Assistant Minister for Tourism Datuk Lee Kim Shin said the state would work out ‘educational tourism’ with Malaysia-Korea Student Exchange Association.
“Here (in the state) we have nature for the teachers and students to do studies on. We also have foreign universities, Swinburne University of Technology in Kuching and Curtin University in Miri to offer intensive English courses to teachers and students from South Korea.

“We will work out educational tourism programmes for them,” Lee told reporters at his office in Bangunan Baitul Makmur yesterday.
He had earlier received a courtesy visit from 24 teachers from South Korea led by chairman of Malaysia-Korea Student Exchange Association, Jin Man Sung who arrived in the state on Tuesday for a four-day, three-night visit.
“The first time visit by the teachers is important and a new beginning for us to establish educational tourism with South Korea – teachers are influential and can become ambassadors to ‘sell’ the state,” he said.
Lee said 7,900 South Korean tourists came to the state as of November last year.
The Assistant Minister for Land And Air Transportation and Safety hoped the state could be connected by direct flight to Seoul or other cities in South Korea.
He said Sarawak was carrying out tourism promotion in Japan and South Korea besides China and Taiwan.
