MIRI: The people from villages in and around Bekenu should harness the abundant culture, adventure and nature (CAN) prospects from their surroundings to be turned into good tourism products.
Assistant Minister for Solidarity Rosey Yunus said the Bekenu folk were blessed with a rich culture and also offerings from Mother Nature.

“We should appreciate this – many villages in Bekenu are surrounded by lush greenery; some are near the rivers and seaside. This is why the government is committed to upgrading the existing infrastructure in Bekenu, such as beautifying the Bungai beach into a beautiful recreational area,” she said in her opening remarks at ‘Kampung Ranchah-Ranchah’s Watersports 2016’ yesterday, where political secretary to the chief minister, Sarkawi Suhaili, was also present.
Rosey, who is Bekenu assemblywoman, disclosed that the government’s latest beach beautification project for Bekenu would be focused on Tusan beach, which had gained fame following the sighting of the natural ‘Blue Tears’ phenomenon along its shores last year.
Thus, she said the people in Bekenu particularly the local tourism operators could expect to see more development activities slated for accelerating the tourism industry in the area.
On the watersports event, Rosey praised the organiser for running such an exciting outing that was pulling in crowds to the area.
“You need to be more creative – look at every means and opportunities that would help attract visitors and have them explore the tourism potential at your villages. At the same time, you can also promote the fisheries-based products to them.” In this regard, Rosey also called on the villagers to continue keeping the rivers in their areas clean and free from any pollution. “Never, ever treat the rivers as waste dumping sites,” she stressed.
