‘Local councils should set up guidelines for fishtail adverts’

SIBU: Local authorities in Sarawak should look into setting up a proper system for approving mounting of fishtail advertisements in public.
Assistant Minister of Local Government Datu Dr Penguang Manggil made the proposal yesterday in response to a call by the Association of Sarawak Advertising Companies to local councils to come up with a more systematic way of letting people know availability of slots for fishtail advertisements..
Penguang said with a proper guideline, fishtail adverts would look more organised and environmentally friendly.

He noted such system has been used by some local authorities overseas and in other states.
The association’s president Lau Sei Kwong reportedly said advertising companies had to make their own survey for availability of slots before applying from the local councils.
The present arrangement, according to Lau, is inconvenient as the advertising companies do not know whether the slots had already taken by someone else.
Lau has also said he supported Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang’s proposal to the state government to give local councils the authority to approve the mounting of billboards.
He said only the local councils would know the suitable places for the billboards.
For now, the State Planning Authority (SPA) has the authority to approve of the mounting of billboards, he pointed out.
Penguang, who is Marudi assemblyman, said Lo’s proposal is worth considering as it would speed up the approval for the billboard, which normally takes quite a while.
“The local authorities are also in the best position to determine where such billboards be erected within their own area.”
