MIRI: Despite objections from certain groups, the Sarawak for
Sarawakians (S4S) movement which has proposed that the Piasau Nature
Reserve (PNR) be renamed as Adenan Satem Piasau Nature Park said the
proposal was agreeable to many of the locals here.
S4S activist
Eric Chin in a press release yesterday, noted that based on the petition
they have collected from the locals, the idea is well-received by most,
as a sign of respect for the deceased former chief minister.
“Adenan
was a nature-loving person and his policy to freeze timber licences
shows his effort. Hence, we are making this call as our way of
remembering Adenan uniquely,” he said.
He added that PNR was the
result born from the efforts of Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) Miri
branch as well as Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting who tirelessly
worked to urge the government to gazette the park.
“Hence, our
proposed name of Adenan Satem Piasau Nature Park is our way to
appreciate both Adenan and those who worked hard to make sure that the
park is protected.
“This is just a proposition and we are ready to
hear out the people’s view on the proposition. If both sides are very
similar, we would suggest the
government to organise a poll or survey before any decision is made, to make sure that both sides are heard.”
He
added that he hoped raising up the issue would spark interest amongst
the public on the importance of protecting and preserving Mother Nature.
“Of
course, our main objective is to raise (awareness for) a good cause,
which is environmental protection and that even though we accept the
possibility that our proposition may not be accepted, it is a vital
environment issue that could help educate the people, especially the
younger generation,” he said.
