There’s opportunity in food truck business — Ting

MIRI: Sarawak United People’s Party (Piasau branch) is looking to boost the food truck business here.
According to the party’s secretary-general Datuk Sebastian Ting, there had been a significant growth in the number of food trucks in cities and major towns in Sarawak of late.
“This is something new here compared to Peninsular Malaysia, particularly Kuala Lumpur. The trend is however picking up very fast here. It’s an exciting and refreshing start-up business model initiated by the creativity of our young entrepreneurs.”

He said this business trend deserved more government support, especially from the local councils to facilitate building a new vibrant stream of ‘hawker’ business.
Saying this business is another interesting platform in promoting the local food street to a new level, Ting, who is also Piasau assemblyman, said SUPP would initiate workshops for food truck business entrepreneurs and introduce such business to young people and equip them with comprehensive guidelines in doing such business.
“SUPP will also help the food truck business owners form interest groups to share their respective real world
experiences and successful recipes with fellow members in the group.
“In other words, it is like a food truck community which opens opportunities especially to youngsters interested in opening up a food truck business,” he told a press conference here yesterday.
He said although the setting of the food trucks was relatively cheaper  compared to opening a full-fledged eatery, SUPP acknowledged that small business loans for the young entrepreneurs were badly needed.
“We will also help seek avenues for small business financing for these start-ups and one of the ways is through 1Malaysia Small Traders Foundation (Yayasan Penjaja dan Peniaga Kecil 1Malaysia) micro credit scheme.”
He said those interested could come to SUPP office here or contact Chia Kah Fung at 016-8963170 for details.
On another matter, Ting urged the public not to use services provided by individuals that imposed charges for BR1M-related matters.
“For those who need to apply, update or check their BR1M, SUPP is providing the service free-of-charge. We will also be going to the ground to man counters to help the public with BR1M.
“We will have our people set up a counter at Persiaran Kabor from 7am to noon today. On Sunday, we will be at Krokop
10 from 7am to noon and on Monday, we will be at Morsjaya from 7am to noon,” he said.
