Mayor: Miri expects influx of tourism this year

MIRI: Visitors to Tusan Beach are annoyed with the poor condition of the access path leading down the cliff towards the beach.
The authorities concerned have been called on to improve the steep, uneven and pothole-riddled dirt path for the safety of visitors.
Regular visitor Abu Bakar said the lack of proper drainage has worsened the path’s condition.
“The authorities concerned must do repair work or tar-seal the road going down the cliff for the safety aspect of visitors going there, especially during the weekend when numbers increase, “ he told The Borneo Post yesterday.

Govt gives go-ahead for all environment-friendly projects in wetlands

MIRI: The state government will not stop any development project that has already been planned within the Kuala Baram Wetlands, as long as the concept is environment friendly.
Second Minister of Resource Planning and Environment Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan reiterated all projects implemented in the wetlands should not only be environmentally friendly but must not chase away the migratory birds and other wildlife there.

Local handicrafts recognised by Unesco/World Crafts Council

KUCHING: Seven types of handicrafts from Sarawak have been awarded the prestigious Unesco/World Crafts Council Award of Excellence 2016.
The seven award-winning handicrafts are Sarawak ‘Kabo’ (bead necklace) by Livan Handicrafts; Sarawak ‘Livan’ (bead necklace) by Livan Handcrafts; bamboo pattern baskets by Bengkel Pembuatan Beg; Penan ‘Ajat’ sling bag by Barefoot Mercy; Tanoti ‘Sampin’ in Shimmery Gold featuring traditional Malay motifs by Tanoti Sdn Bhd; Rattan Coil Platters by Long Lamai Community by Institute of Social Informatics and Technological Innovations, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas); and Indigo ‘Pua Kumbu’ silk ‘ikat’ stole by Nancy Ngali.
Society Atelier Sarawak (The Arts and Crafts Society of Sarawak Malaysia) president Edric Ong revealed this achievement at a press conference here yesterday.

Intensifying marine research efforts in Sarawak

KUCHING: Marine research efforts in the state will be stepped up as project sites for Rimba (Research for Intensified Management of Bio-rich Areas) Sarawak research platform will be extended to include Miri-Sibuti Coral Reefs National Park (MSCRNP).
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) to enable this was signed between Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) and Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin) recently.

BOET Borneo 744 ready for operation

Borneo 744’s Block A has the biggest space among the five buildings at this upcoming Entrepreneurs and Arts District.

KUCHING: Malaysia’s first Blue Ocean Entrepreneurs Township (BOET) Borneo 744 is in its final stages of signing agreements with anchor licensees, targeting March 1 as handover date.
Its general manager Evelyn Jutem said the 10-acre riverfront project, which will be the hub of creativity, performing arts, innovation and entrepreneurship in Sarawak, will have Malaysian Global Innovation & Creativity Centre (MaGIC) and Boutique Songket Atelier Tanoti among its tenants.
“Borneo 744, dubbed the ‘Entrepreneurs and Arts District, Sarawak’, is a 100 per cent not-for-profit non-governmental organisation (NGO) to be operated by a CLBG (company limited by guarantee), which is a Yayasan-type entity.

MCC to further explore tourism potentials in Resort City

MIRI: The Miri City Council (MCC) will look at all avenues to further explore the tourism potentials in the Resort City.
Miri mayor Adam Yii said in order to make Miri a place worth visiting, local tourism operators need to further explore the tourism potentials in the city and to make existing tourism products more appealing to the visitors particularly foreign tourists.
“We need to intensify the existing tourism promotion in the city. We want to make Miri not only as the northern gateway to Sarawak but a city for tourism activities,” he stated while commending the MCC’s brochure sub-committee’s Miri City Tour recently.

‘Unlicensed Miri hotels lack safety features’

Law says one of the offences committed by operators of unlicensed hotels is not having good fire escape routes.
MIRI: A surprise inspection conducted by Miri Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) and Miri City Council (MCC) on 20 unlicensed hotels here has revealed that almost all these premises do not comply with the safety requirements for buildings enforced by the government.
The firefighters and MCC enforcement officers – led by Miri Bomba Superintendent II Ahmad Nizam Sapaiee – ran the fire-risk checks from Feb 7 to 10 on hotels with 20 rooms and above that were not registered with the council.

MIRI: Over 90 students accompanied by academics from two departments of the School of Built Environment, Faculty of Humanities at Curtin University’s Perth Campus chose Sarawak as their destination for the international field trip component of studies in architecture and eco-tourism.
The choice was made largely due to the many interesting facets of Sarawak and the opportunities for impactful study it offers, as well as an ongoing collaboration in student mobility between Perth Campus and Curtin Malaysia, Curtin University’s largest international campus here.

MIRI: Sibuti could offer river cruises to watch crocodiles as a new tourism product, said Sibuti Member of Parliament Ahmad Lai Bujang.
He said this could be another attraction for visitors to the area besides the Tusan, Peliau and Tanjung Bungai beaches, Niah Cave and Lambir Waterfall.

問題多多 石油博物館亟需維修


(本报美里7日讯)美里石油博物馆冷气损坏、设施破旧问题迄今乃未解决改善。
自2016年3月期间,美里最具历史性及吸引外国游客来参观的石油博物馆,也称为一号油井,建立于加拿大山最高顶上。
石油博物馆也配合2005年5月20日美里升市,由前首长敦泰益玛目主持开幕,并吸引游客前往参观,尤其是外国人的关注,来到美里,必到此一游。
为了保存石油博物馆历史古迹,由砂州政府、国家石油公司与砂蚬标公司在该处建造了这座耗资1千万令吉的石油博物馆,向世人展示美里石油业的辉煌历史。
馆里陈列着石油形成与分布图、石油开发示意图、地下石油、海外钻油台模型、图文并茂的石油业发展历史照片,和一些钻油机器等。

MIRI: Fritters made from locally-caught shrimp or ‘cucur bubuk’ have the potential to be promoted as a local delicacy to tourists visiting Miri city.
Member of Parliament for Sibuti Ahmad Lai Bujang said ‘cucur bubuk’ which is tasty and delicious can be taken during high-tea and gatherings among family members and friends in the afternoon and even during special occasions.

State asked to prioritise deepening of Miri port

MIRI: The state government has been called on to prioritise a project to deepen Miri Port in Kuala Baram.
Assistant Minister for Land and Air Transportation and Safety Datuk Lee Kim Shin said the project would have a major impact on Miri’s economy.
“The completion of the channel will certainly help to boost the sustainable economic development of Miri, with bigger ships able to enter Miri Port and, at the same time, help boost the growth of the existing shipbuilding industry,” he said during the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Chinese New Year celebration on Friday.
